On August 1, 2017, at block #478,558, a new chain — Bitcoin Cash — split off from Bitcoin. Big-block proponents rejected the SegWit scaling path and launched a client supporting blocks up to 8 MB. Every BTC holder as of that block received an equal amount of BCH.
