🔢 The Value Overflow Incident
On 15 August 2010, user lfm found that block 74638 carried a transaction exploiting an integer overflow: two outputs received roughly 92,233,720,368.54 BTC each. Satoshi posted a same-day fix — "Check for negative and overflow values... if (txout.nValue > 21000000 * COIN) return error" — and the network switched to the corrected chain the next day.
