On July 17, 2010, Bitcoin 0.3.2 was released. In this version, Satoshi added checkpoints, designed to secure the network from deep reorganizations and nodes from DOS attacks.
Later, checkpoints stopped being added to the blockchain. The last one was added at block height 295,000.
